Plasticizers are essential additives in flexible PVC production. They improve flexibility, softness and processability, making PVC suitable for applications such as flooring, cables, synthetic leather, films and flexible profiles.

However, different PVC applications require different plasticizer properties. So, how do you choose the right one?

Start with the PVC Application

The first step is to understand the requirements of the finished product.

PVC Flooring may require good flexibility, durability and long-term performance.

PVC Cables often require flexibility, good processing performance and durability.

Synthetic Leather generally requires softness, flexibility and good surface performance.

PVC Films & Sheets may require a balance of flexibility, processability and migration resistance.

The plasticizer should match both the technical requirements of the product and the requirements of the target market.

Understand the Main Plasticizer Options

DOP

DOP (DEHP) is a traditional plasticizer widely used in flexible PVC formulations. It provides effective plasticization and established processing performance.

DOP can be considered for conventional PVC applications where its use is permitted by the target market and applicable regulations.

DOTP

DOTP is a commonly used non-phthalate plasticizer and an alternative to traditional phthalate plasticizers.

It is widely considered for PVC flooring, synthetic leather, cables, films and other flexible PVC products, particularly when manufacturers require a non-phthalate formulation.

EFAME

EFAME (Epoxidized Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) is a bio-based plasticizer derived from renewable fatty acid methyl ester feedstocks.

It can be used in flexible PVC formulations where manufacturers are looking for bio-based plasticizer solutions and more sustainability-oriented material options.

ESBO

ESBO (Epoxidized Soybean Oil) is a bio-based plasticizer commonly used as a secondary plasticizer in PVC formulations.

In addition to its plasticizing effect, its epoxy functionality can provide additional benefits in PVC formulations. ESBO is often combined with primary plasticizers to achieve a balanced formulation.

DOP, DOTP, EFAME or ESBO?

There is no single plasticizer that is suitable for every PVC application.

DOP may be considered for conventional and cost-sensitive PVC formulations where permitted.

DOTP is a popular option for manufacturers looking for non-phthalate plasticizer solutions.

EFAME can be considered when bio-based and renewable material content is an important part of the formulation strategy.

ESBO is often used as a secondary plasticizer, particularly in formulations where its epoxy functionality and bio-based characteristics are desired.

The final selection should consider performance, formulation, regulatory requirements, cost and supply stability.

Consider Regulatory Requirements

Before selecting a plasticizer, manufacturers should check the requirements of the destination market and final application.

Depending on the product and market, factors such as phthalate restrictions, chemical regulations, customer specifications and sustainability requirements may influence the choice of plasticizer.

For export-oriented PVC manufacturers, regulatory compliance should be considered together with technical performance.

Test Before Full-Scale Production

Even when a plasticizer appears suitable on paper, formulation trials are recommended before commercial production.

Important factors may include:

  • Hardness and flexibility
  • Tensile strength and elongation
  • Migration and volatility
  • Thermal stability
  • Processing performance
  • Aging performance

Testing helps manufacturers determine the appropriate plasticizer type and dosage for their specific PVC formulation.

Choosing the Right Plasticizer

The best plasticizer is not necessarily the cheapest option. It should provide the right balance of performance, cost, compliance and supply reliability.
