While the concept of the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is widely known, its true value lies in the rigorous implementation of “environmental commitments” across complex global supply chains. Far from being a mere self-proclaimed corporate statement, GRS is a strict, technology- and data-driven traceability system that monitors the movement of every single gram of recycled material.
In practice, GRS certification relies on a core “Chain-of-Custody” model and ensures that green commitments are upheld through four key pillars of transparency:
- Closed-loop Supply Chain Control
Every enterprise involved in the supply chain—from the initial recycling source and intermediaries to the final manufacturer—must independently obtain GRS certification. If the chain is broken at any point, the certification for the entire chain immediately becomes invalid. - “Digital IDs” for Transactions (Transaction Certificates – TCs)
An official Transaction Certificate (TC) must be issued every time materials change hands. These certificates precisely record the material’s origin, real-time weight, and recycled content percentage, ensuring that every finished product possesses an immutable “provenance record.” - Rigorous Third-Party On-site Audits
GRS certification is not a “one-and-done” process. Independent, authoritative third-party bodies conduct regular on-site audits. These go beyond verifying the materials themselves to strictly assess whether the enterprise fully meets standards regarding environmental management, social responsibility (labor rights), and chemical safety (non-toxic production). - Strict Mass Balance Tracking
Within production facilities, certified materials are strictly segregated from conventional materials and precisely tracked. Through scientific “input-output mass balance” calculations, the system completely eliminates the possibility of non-certified materials being surreptitiously introduced or maliciously mixed in.
